General Tips
Over 12,000 children's and young adult books are located in the General Collection of the library. The call numbers for these titles will always begin with the letters LU.
Most fiction titles are given the call letters LU PZ 7 and then they are arranged by author. However, the classification of this collection has not been consistent therefore it is difficult to browse the collection.
NOTE: Some young adult literature titles are also appropriate for adults. Titles that fall into this category are generally catalog in the general fiction collection not the children's collection. These items will not have call numbers which start with LU.
There are also a large number of children's books in the CIMC. These books are part of literature based text series and can also be found using the Library's catalog. Children's books located in the CIMC have call numbers which start with a two digit subject number (i.e. 02, 71 or 81).
If you are just looking of additional titles on a topic or by an author which the library does not own and you do not have to check them out, go to Novelist. This is an electronic online readers' advisory tool that can help you find additional books based on a specific book (i.e. Sarah Plain and Tall) or topic/theme. They also have quite a few book discussion guides and book talks for the middle and high school level.

Instructions for searching the catalog by author or title, subject, and keyword are detailed below.

Finding children's books on a particular topic is a little complicated.
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.

2. Choose the Subject option from the Library's on-line catalog Search by: menu.

3. Type in your topic plus the word juvenile. Putting the word juvenile after you topic will limit the search to materials that have been designated specifically for children or young adults.

4. Click the Catalog Search button.
5. Results: Subject headings with the word juvenile after it, whether it is juvenile fiction; literature or whatever, indicates the titles listed under the subject are for children. The phrase 'juvenile literature' refers to non-fiction titles.

Keyword Searching
Although using the Subject option will help you find children's book, the best way to find children's books is using the WORD option on the search menu.
Doing a subject search on 'dogs juvenile' retrieved about 100 titles. However, doing word search instead  will retrieve about 140 titles.
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.

2. Choose the Word option from the Library's on-line catalog Search by: menu.
