General Tips for Searching the Catalog

Always read the screen carefully.
There is a lot of information on the screen which may be of importance to your search.
The Modify Search button is extremely helpful for narrowing searches to a particular collections (i.e. CIMC), type of material (i.e. videos) and/or publisher.
To mark records:

1. Check the appropriate box(es) next to titles.
2. Before you go to the next page click the Save Marked Records.
To email a list of saved marked records [this is helpful for creating a reference list or bibliography]

1. Click on the Export Saved List at the top of the page.
2. Type in your email address.
3. Click the Submit button at the end of the list. [All bibliographic information for the items will be sent to you.]
Remember to clear your list before you start a new list, otherwise you will get the records again.
To print a list of saved marked records:

1. Click on the Export Saved List button at the top of the page.
2. Click on the Extended Display at the top of the page to show the call numbers.
3. Click on Print in your browser display bar.
If you have more than 12 items in your list you will need to repeat this process for each page.

Author/Title Searching

If you know the author or title of what you are looking for simply choose the appropriate search from the search menu.
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.
  library home page

2. Click on the down arrow next to Search by: drop-down menu in the upper right corner of this page. to see the drop-down menu.
  author search 1
3. Choose the author or title option from the drop-down menu.
  author search 2

4. Type in the author or title.
  author search 4
5. Click the Search button.
  Results:
  author search 5

Read the screen carefully. If there is only one entry for your request it will be displayed. If there are several authors by the same name or several records for the same author you may have to click on something else to get a complete list by an author.
Subject Searching

When trying to find instructional materials on a particular subject:
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.
  library home page

2. Click on the down arrow next to Search by: drop-down menu to see the drop-down menu.
  author search 1
3. Choose the Subject option from the drop-down menu.
  subject 1

4. Type the subject and then the phrase STUDY AND TEACHING.
[Example: science study and teaching]
  subject search 1
5. Click the Catalog Search button.
  Results:
  subject search3

6. Click on the subject heading to see the titles.
  subject search 4

This works best with broad subject areas. Displayed materials will include both theorical and practical titles.
Examples:
science study and teaching
science study and teaching elementary
mathematics study and teaching
art study and teaching
Other helpful subject headings are:
activity programs in education
bulletin boards
creative activities and seat work [for learning centers]
NOTE: There are a few oddities when it comes to subject headings in the catalog:
Social Studies should be typed in as Social Sciences (and don't forget the 's' at the end of sciences!)
If you use the Language Arts you do not have to include the phrase 'study and teaching'.
ESL should be typed in as English Language Study and Teaching Foreign Speakers or English Language Textbooks for Foreign Speakers.
Second Language Learning should be typed in as Second Language Acquistion.
Keyword Searching

For a little more flexibility in searching use the Word option when searching the Library's on-line catalog. Combining words like activities, strategies, teaching, experiments, etc. with a subject area should produce a variety of materials.
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.
  library home page

2. Click on the down arrow to see the drop-down menu.
  author search 1
3. Choose the word option from the drop-down menu.
  keyword search 1

4. Type in the word[s] you want to search. [Example: writing activities]
  keyword search 2
5. Click the Catalog Search button.
  Results:
  keyword search 3

Additional Examples:
esl activities
teaching addition
reading teaching strategies
mathematics learning center
Using keyword searching will produce children's books with activities, experiments, etc. on the given topic. Do not dismiss these titles. They contain a lot of things you can incorporate in to your units.
TIP: To hone in on learning center books try the words kids stuff. This will bring up about 20 titles related to learning centers. Using the call numbers on these items you will find other similar materials on the shelf.
Limiting Your Search

If you have retrieved a large number of items from either an author, subject or word search you can futher limit your search using the Modify Search button at the top of the page. Limiting a search can help you find a video on a particular topic or find out what items are in the CIMC.

Finding CIMC Materials

All materials housed in the CIMC except the NASA collection are arranged by a unique numerical classification system. The system is based on the North Carolina Textbook inventory codes. Each subject area has been assigned a two digit number that will begin all call numbers.
For example:
The call numbers for all reading materials whether they are computer software, videos or textbooks will begin with the two digit number 02, all geometry materials will begin with 56, and so on.

To see all of the CIMC materials in a particular broad subject area:
1. Consult the subject classification list to determine the subject area number
2. Click on the corresponding hotlink.

— OR —
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.
  library home page

2. Click on the Search by: down arrow to see the drop-down menu.
  author search 1
3. Select the Other Call Number option from the drop-down menu.
  other call number search 1
4. Type in the two digit subject area number (i.e. 56 for geometry) and click the Search button.
  other call number search 2
  Results:
  other call number search 3

Once you have located all the materials on a particular subject you can use the Modify Search button at the top of the page to pull out a particular format such as videos or a particular publisher such as Scholastic.

  CIMC searching 1

2. Click on the MATERIAL Type drop-down menu.
  CIMC searching 2
3. Choose videos.

4. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.
Finding Textbooks in the CIMC

Both North Carolina state approved text series and non-state approved texts are available in the Center. Most of the titles are K-12 but the collection does include some materials appropriate for preschool students. In the past a textbook series generally included a student and teacher edition of a textbook plus some workbooks or solution manuals. Now-a-days, however, most series no longer adhere to this traditional format. A textbook series may now include a wide variety of materials children's books, worksheets, videos, laser discs, computer software, etc. All materials in a series will be shelved together unless otherwise noted.
Search by Call Number:
Probably the most comprehensive way to search textbooks and other CIMC materials is by using the Other Call Number option on the search menu. Consult the Subject Area Classification List to determine what the two digit number is for a particular subject area. Then —
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.
  library home page

2. Click on the Search by: down arrow to see the drop-down menu.
  author search 1
3. Choose the Other Call # option from the drop-down menu.
  other call number search 1
4. Type in the two digit subject area number (i.e. 56 for geometry) then click the Search button.
  other call number search 2
5. Click on the Modify Search button at the top of the page.
  CIMC searching

6. Type the name of the publisher in the Publisher text box and then click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.
  CIMC searching
Word Search
Another way to search for textbooks is using the Word option in the library's catalog search menu. If you want a list of the NC Basic Texts in your subject area type the subject and then the phrase basic text.

Example: social sciences basic text.

This should give you texts series in the subject area which were adopted by NC Department of Public Instruction. It may also give you other titles as well so you will have to check the call numbers to determine which are textbooks.
Finding Multimedia Materials

There are a wide array of multimedia resources located both in the CIMC and in the general collection which can be used in the classroom. Multimedia resources include videocassettes, DVDs, computer software, CDs, records, etc. The best way to locate these materials is by first doing a subject or word search and then limiting it to a specific format or to the Audiovisual area.
However, limiting a search to the location Audiovisual may not find everything because not all of the multimedia resources are located in the Audiovisual area. It more effective to limit by material then by location.

To locate multimedia resources using the Material Type:
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.
  library home page

2. Click on the Search by: down arrow to see the drop-down menu.
  author search 1
3. Choose Word or Subject option from drop-down menu.
  keyword search 1

4. Type in our topic and click the Search button.

5. Click the Modify Search button at the top of the page.
  CIMC searching 1

6. Click on MATERIAL Type drop-down menu.
  CIMC searching 2
7. Choose videos or which ever format you want.
  CIMC searching 3
8. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

To locate multimedia resources using the Location:
1. Go to the library's home page and click on Books, Catalog, Videos.
  library home page

2. Click on the Search by: down arrow to see the drop-down menu.
  author search 1
3. Choose Word or Subject option from search menu.
  keyword search 1

4. Type in our topic and click the Search button.

5. Click the Modify Search button at the top of the page.
  CIMC searching 1

6. Click on Location drop-down menu.
  CIMC searching 8
7. Choose Audiovisual (or CIMC) and click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.
