Respiratory Book Collection Increased through EZ Grant Award

The J. Murrey Atkins Library has purchased over 100 Respiratory Therapy books from a $10,000 “EZ Strengthening Public and Academic Library Collections” Grant, thanks to the efforts of Research Librarians’ Lisa Nickel and Lois Stickell working with UNCC faculty. This grant will be used to add a collection of over “100 high quality texts in the areas of respiratory care, pulmonary pathology and critical care medicine, according to Dr. Joe Coyle, Department of Kinesiology.

Dr. Coyle also explains, “These additions will be tremendously useful not only to the BSRT students and faculty but to anyone in the University with an interest in these subjects".  Title examples are:

Pulmonary Rehabilitation:  Guidelines to Success [edited by] John E. Hodgkin, Bartolome R. Celli, Mosby/Elsevier, c2009

Laboratory Exercises For Competency in Respiratory Care,  Thomas J. Butler, F.A. Davis Co., c2009

The State Library of North Carolina (a division of the Department of Cultural Resources) administers the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant program. This program, funded from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), funds projects across the state that help libraries deliver learning opportunities for a lifetime, support libraries in their mission to provide cost-effective access to the Internet and as well as information expertise and make library resources more accessible to all users. Atkins Library’s $10,000.00 grant will cover 79% of the total cost of the program, resulting in 21% (or $2,696) of the cost being financed by nongovernmental sources.

Atkins Library Receives Grant to expand New South Voices

The Atkins Library Special Collections Department at UNC Charlotte has received a grant to enhance its New South Voices oral history database. The grant will allow Special Collections to add digitized transcripts and audio of more than 200 oral history interviews related to Civil Rights, Education, the African-American experience, and the Native American experience in North Carolina to the publicly available database, which already contains some 600 interviews. Additionally, to provide further historical context for the interviews, supplemental material from manuscript collections will be digitized and integrated into lesson plans designed by Middle and High School social studies teachers as part of a two week hands-on institute to utilize oral history materials in the classroom. This project is supported by $48,680 in grant funds from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the NC Department of Cultural Resources and 10% in matching funds from UNC Charlotte.
