EBSCOhost: Research Databases - search multiple databases at one time - any topic; includes business, education, health, etc. Many full-text articles. Select Academic Search Premier, Masterfile, and other indexes as appropriate. New: Step by Step Instructions (PDF)

If the results are HTML Full Text or PDF Full Textjust click to get your article.
Otherwise click the Get it Button button. This links to the library catalog and in most cases will find the full-text article.

If your article is not full text, check the library catalog to see if the library has a print subscription to the journal or magazine.(more on this)

FIND: Older Articles

The library has many older magazine and journal articles in it's print collection on the 2nd floor. It also has access to archives of older materials. There are both print and electronic indexes for finding articles in these by topic.
(See: Searching for older articles).

FIND: Books - Library Catalog

• Use the library catalog find books and other materials owned by UNC Charlotte.
Find a book on a topic or subject use word searching.
Find books about a person an author or the works of an author, use a subject search (last name, then, first name of author).
Catalog records show call numbers and availability status.
Books located in the General Collection may be checked out.

FIND: A Web Site

There are many great resources on the Web, and some not so good. For best results, search by multiple keywords or phrases.

Most librarians recommend starting with Google. Google now has many subsearches including, Google/US Government which searches for local and federal documents, Google Scholar, Google Books, and more.

Search Engines - Links to the major search engines (by type of search) with descriptions of scope and arrangement.

About using Search Engines:
These sites search the web for pages or sites by key word. To effectively use them you need to narrow your topic as much as possible. Sometimes you need to try your search with variations or synonyms for a word. Use significant words. Omit articles and connective words such as a, an, the, and, or, with, etc. Here is an excellent guide to searching Google.

You can also find many excellent Web sources through our Hot Topics for Research Papers page. This not only lists many excellent ideas for topics, but also links to reliable sources for information.

Research Tips

What is a Primary Source?
• What is a Secondary Source?
If you need a scholarly, academic journal and are not sure what this means, this link gives information and examples.
Newspapers: - The library has several electronic indexes for these. Often you will get only the citation. However, several sources provide the full-text of the articles. Here is a a link to more information about researching newspaper articles.
Citation & Style Guides, MLA, etc. - Correct ways to site electronic and Web sources for your research papers.
Web site evaluation - Not everything on the Web is good. Find out how to evaluate individual websites. See also Websites in an Academic Environment - a comparison chart showing the difference between library and web resources.
