  Wireless FAQs

What is Wireless?
Wireless means connecting your computer to the Internet without using a network cable or wire. Find out how to configure your computer and where to get technical support.  Don't have a computer? Find out where to checkout a wireless laptop!

What does a Wireless Hotspot look like?
The only visible sign of a Hotspot is an antenna sticking out of the ceiling. Depending on your computer's wireless equipment, the Wireless Hotspot signal can be received thirty or more feet away from the antenna. The closer you are to the antenna, the better your signal will be.

Where are the Wireless Hotspots in the Library?
Wireless Hotspots are located on the Ground, First, Second, and Third Floors.

How do I know if I have a good signal?

Just like your mobile phone, your wireless computer has a signal meter, or "bars". To the right are two examples of what your bars may look like.

The more bars you see, the better your signal will be!

      Windows Signal Meter

What else can I do to improve performance?
Find a Hotspot antenna, and sit within view of it. Avoid sitting where there are obstacles between you and the antenna, such as book shelves and building columns.

Not all wireless cards and computers are created equally. You may have to position your computer with the back of the screen facing the antenna, or the side of the computer facing the antenna.

Security Notice
The Library's wireless network does not use encryption, except during the login process. After logging in, your wireless communications can be intercepted by nefarious persons with a wireless device and the appropriate software.

It is strongly recommended not to transmit any sensitive or personal information while using the wireless network.

Make sure to use secure (encrypted) options on the various web sites you frequent.

Look for a "lock" Lock on your web browser software. The lock indicates when your communications are being encrypted.
